Independence Day is almost here and the best way to celebrate is with a patriotic cake. One fun way to celebrate with the kids at home is by having them help with this cake. Pass them a spoon and let them mix in the food coloring. I'm sure you'll be able to use this recipe for other occasions.

Ingredients

  • 2 boxes Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ White Cake Mix
  • 6 egg whites
  • 3 cups water
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • Zest of one lemon
  • 1 packet (.25 oz) red food coloring
  • 1 packet (.25 oz) blue food coloring
  • 1 container of vanilla frosting
  • 12 blueberries

Directions

  •
    1
Preheat the oven to 350°F. You'll need a bundt cake mold (10x3 1/2), greased and floured.
  •
    2
Prepare the cakes as per the instructions found on the box, remember to double the amount because you're using two boxes.
  •
    3
Once everything is well combined you'll need to divide the mixture into 3 medium bowls. Two of the bowls will be 3 cups each. Once they have been divided, pour the contents of the red food coloring packet into one of these bowls and the blue into the other. Mix well using a rubber spatula.
  •
    4
The rest of the mixture, about 4 cups, will remain in its original color.
  •
    5
You can start filling the mold with a ladle. One spoonful of each color layered on one at a time until you finish the mixes. You don't have to move the mold, just let the colors mix themselves as you pour.
  •
    6
Bake for approximately 1 hour and use a knife to make sure it's ready.
  •
    7
Remove from the oven and let cool completely before removing from the mold.
