Homemade Shaved Ice

Shaved ice brings back many childhood memories. I remember when I used to have gym class in school and a shaved ice vendor would set up right outside of school. He made the best shaved ice I’ve ever had. He would also sell what we call “chupi-chupi” in Venezuela, which is basically shaved ice stuffed into a plastic bag. It's not very common to see shaved ice carts in the States, so I decided to make my own homemade version. My kids love it! And I'm happy to share some of my culture through food. Try them out!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 package (0.14 oz) cherry-flavored powdered drink mix
  • 1 package (0.14 oz) passion-fruit-flavored powdered drink mix
  • 4-6 cups crushed ice
  • Condensed milk to taste

Directions

    Add the water and sugar to a small pan and cook over medium heat; stir to blend well. Cook until the sugar is completely dissolved and the mixture looks slightly thick, about 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool.

    Divide mixture into two equal portions. Add one package of powdered drink mix to each portion.

    Fill 4 glasses halfway with crushed ice. Pour the passion fruit syrup over the ice. Add more crushed ice to completely fill the glasses. Pour the cherry syrup over the ice. Sprinkle with condensed milk to taste.

    Serve immediately.
