The weather is heating up and it’s the perfect time to prepare your grill for some summer BBQ parties. And you can also spice up your menu with homemade sauces! This Latin-inspired recipe contains the sweetness of guava and is perfect for grilled meats. Guava BBQ sauce brings an unexpected twist in flavors, yet is traditional enough to serve at any 4th of July party.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 Spanish sweet onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup guava paste
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup water, used as desired to thin sauce

Directions

    Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and onions.

    Sauté onions until soft, then add garlic and cook 1 minute longer. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a gentle simmer.

    Reduce heat, cover and let simmer for 25-30 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

Expert Tips

    You can find guava paste at most Latino supermarkets. But if you are having difficulties, use peaches instead. They won’t give you the tropical twist, but your BBQ sauce will still be distinctively sweet.
