There are combinations that are perfect. For example, bread with butter or arepas with butter, tomato and basil, and rice with beans are wonderful combinations. One of these perfect pairs is the marriage of figs and arequipe (dulce de leche). This is a delicious Colombian dessert that can be prepared in the blink of an eye and is enjoyed by kids and adults. After eating all the figs I could manage, I decided to make crescent rolls with figs and arequipe. The perfect recipe as a snack or dessert.

Ingredients

  • 12 green figs, washed
  • 1/2 pound of brown sugar
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • Water
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated Pillsbury™ Original Crescent Rolls (8 Count)
  • 1/2 cup caramel or dulce de leche

Directions

  •
    1
To cook the figs: Make a uniform cross on the surface of each fig.
  •
    2
Place the figs in a bowl and cover with water. Let sit for 24 hours.
  •
    3
Add the sugar and cinnamon to a medium pot with 5 cups of water and cook at low heat until the sugar has dissolved and turns to syrup.
  •
    4
Add the figs and cook until the sugar has thickened and the figs are tender. Approximately 2 hours.
  •
    5
To prepare the crescents: heat the oven to 375°F. Open the tube of dough and cover a cookie tray with parchment paper.
  •
    6
Unroll the dough and separate the triangles carefully.
  •
    7
Add one tablespoon of arequipe to the wide section of the triangle and add half a fig to each.
  •
    8
Roll up the dough from the wide end until you reach the other extreme. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until they’ve browned.
