Turnips are in season and they're definitely a popular winter veggie. The turnip is an excellent potato substitute since you can easily make a mash, or purée out of them. Although we don’t typically think about using this root vegetable, the flavor they bring to the table is delicioso and a creamy turnip mash goes well with the traditional turkey dinner, pork roast or grilled fish. I invite you to try this recipe and introduce your family to new ingredients, and new sabores.

Ingredients

  • 8 medium turnips, peeled
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

    Add the turnips and water to a pot and boil for half an hour, covered, until the turnips are soft enough to mash.

    Drain, and smash turnips with a potato masher. Once smashed into a purée or mash, add the remaining ingredients and serve as a side with casserole and red and white meats, such as fish.

    To give this more traditional mash a different sabor, try using Greek yogurt in place of the sour cream, and add 2 potatoes.
