We often don’t know what to bring along as a gift when we’re invited to someone’s home during the holidays. These caramel-coated almonds are always welcome, whether they’re served as an appetizer or with coffee. At home I usually serve them with cheese and fruit. Remember to wrap them in a cute bag or in a box with a nice bow, and include the recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg white
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 pound almonds

Directions

  •
    1
Preheat the oven to 250 °F.
  •
    2
Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  •
    3
Place the sugar, cinnamon and salt in a bag and mix well.
  •
    4
In a large bowl, place the egg white, water and vanilla. Beat with a fork until blended, about 1 minute. Add the almonds and stir well, until all the almonds are coated.
  •
    5
Using a slotted spoon, take out the almonds and add them to the bag of sugar. Close and shake until all the almonds are covered in sugar.
  •
    6
Place the almonds on the baking sheet, over the parchment paper, and spread evenly to make one layer.
  •
    7
Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes or so.
  •
    8
    Let cool completely before serving.
